There is a local saying in Dufftown: “Rome was built on seven hills and Dufftown stands on seven stills.”
Glendullan was the last distillery built in this whisky epicenter. Opened relatively late (1898), by 1902 the Glendullan was being supplied to King Edward VII. In 1972, the distillery was expanded to meet demand, with a further six stills added. Today, Glendullan produces more whisky than most of the distilleries in Diageo's Classic Malts selection (in fact their second largest producer, right after Dufftown and before Caol Ila).

Glendullan and Dufftown distilleries have remained mostly focused on blends (Old Parr for one), but around 2007, Diageo finally reintroduced them to the market as single malts - together with Glen Ord. The marketing gets a little confusing as the whiskies are labelled under the Singleton name, then scheduled for release in different continents - USA, Europe and Asia each get different whiskies.

Other reviews... This is the first Special Releases bottling of Glendullan, and also the oldest expression in the 2014 line-up. It has been matured in refill European oak casks and 3,756 bottles are available. Initially pears and soft spice on the nose, with emerging toffee, icing sugar and white pepper. Intense peppery fruitiness on the pleasantly oaky palate, black pepper. Lingering fruit and chewy oak in the lengthy finish. 59.8% ABV
