Born and bred in Edinburgh, Whisky Craft's founder, Sonny Charles, has spent more than a decade immersed in the world of spirits. Before Whisky Craft launched in 2025, Sonny worked with some of the country's most respected whisky brands, helping to secure major retailers, achieve industry awards and collaborate with national institutions to create bespoke expressions. His background has helped in sourcing some quite special drams for Whisky Craft's first editions. This cask strength Mortlach is one of three malts making up the inaugural 'season' that have just landed. Rich, warming and robust, the aromas take coaxing to tease out hints of wooly jumpers, granita biscuits and a fresh, citric top note. On the palate, there's a full throttle, spirited-drive of the leaner citrusy variety. Very good uncut, if a little tense, adding just 5ml of water transforms it into an all-round meatier, maltier experience with milk chocolate and lovely heart-warmth that continues to float beautifully even after further dilution. A step up from the NAS Diageo 2023 release (at double the price), and exactly the kind of Mortlach you'd expect from a cask strength indie. Feel lucky if you get one. Only 64 bottles were filled. Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Sweet and bold, brown sugar, golden syrup, orchard fruit, apricot jam and orange oil. Palate: smooth and full bodied with dried fruits, coconut, cranberry and a creamy caramel backbone. Finish: Long, warm and layered with toffee, peach, a touch of white pepper, followed by an underlying sweetness.
