A benchmark for Taiwanese whisky, Kavalan's Solist Oloroso edition is the nation's answer to Scotland's sherry bombs. Summed up as "Macallan on steroids", the distillery has some excellent cask suppliers and they know how to recreate a trademark style on a regular basis: Super-concentrated with flavours of dark fruit, chocolate and spice, and usually needing water to open up its complex layers, reviewers highlight its richness, sweetness and distinctively tropical/fermented fruit character alongside traditional sherry notes. Some batches are close to being over-oaked, others strike a fine oak-fruit balance. Whichever you get, you're in for an intense drinking experience.
