Tasting note: The name is enough to intrigue veteran malt lovers. 'Croftengea' is actually produced by Loch Lomond distillery and equates to a classification for a spirit type. According to scotchwhisky.com, "These spirits span various cut points, yeast types and peating levels, with Croftengea sitting at the heavily peated end of the spectrum". Hunter Laing's bottling from a single refill hogshead ranks as one of the more idiosyncratic whiskies of the year. Engagingly sweet, then sooty on the nose with hints of butter menthol and dried grass; the palate has an exotic fruitiness while the peat is in retreat. At the finish, the malt turns fresher, perhaps more citrusy? The co-mingling of fruit and (understated) peat in controlled tension makes for a fascinating whisky experience. 50% Alc./Vol. 339 bottles.
