Glengyle Distillery Kilkerran 8 Year Old Bourbon Cask Matured Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - 2024 Bottling
"The most Springbank-like Kilkerran I have had so far, absolutely fantastic!" - whiskybase.com
The 11th batch of the ever-popular eight year old has landed. Fully aged in bourbon casks, the resulting whisky has a creamy feel with notes of vanilla, toffee, banana, apple and herbal peat, intensified by bottling at cask strength. As the oiliness and sweetness from the maturation tangoes with the smoke and waxy-minerality of the distillate, it's hard to avoid comparisons with Springbank or Talisker. Consensus is that it's about as good as eight year old Scotch gets, with some now preferring this over Kilkerran's older expressions. 55.6% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... If you thought the secret to the Kilkerran 8's was in the sherry part, think again! The bourbon release is the true way to experience the Zen of Kilkerran! Don't add water, it gives bitterness. There is no point in repeating my notes in detail, since the style completely repeats the Springbank style! - whiskybase.com
...bourbon cask matured, and what a beauty it is. Sometimes it feels just like Springbank. 91/100. I think this is the best Kilkerran out of fourteen I have tried between 2019 and 2025. A truly great Campbeltown malt. - whiskybase.com
...Yes yes yes, this is by far the nicest batch of the 8 year old Kilkerran I've had so far - probably because all the others have been either port or sherry. The Springbank DNA runs right through the nose and the taste, and you could easily mistake it for one. Beautifiul, oily mouthfeel. Classic ex-bourbon cask notes alongside the Campbeltown funk, without going too heavy in the vanillas. Quality bourbon casks were used and the batch was expertly blended. It's not super complex, but it is "only" 8 years old after all. No aggressiveness despite its young age. There is a nice peaty grapefruit type of bitterness in the taste and finish, a very interesting note. A bit of sweetness too, but not too much. Still, it's very enjoyable and with a couple of drops of water this is a very dangerous one. - whiskybase.com
