This year’s Kilkerran 16 is sure to turn a few heads, landing with an uncharacteristically dark colour and a temporary change in bottle style. Matured in 60% Bourbon and 40% Sherry casks, the shift is said to be significant and almost incomparable to last year's 70/30 bourbon/sherry split. Fans are in for an absolute banger, with the same coastal Kilkerran style we're used to, mixed up with maraschino cherries, dates, marzipan and hazelnuts. In short, an all-round richer expression showcasing a fabulous sherry influence they may never be repeated. Other reviews... Another step up for the Kilkerran 16, it seems each one is better than the last. This is very close in profile to the Springbank 15 I think but just about keeps it it’s own thing. I haven’t seen a huge amount of kilkerran in sherry outside of the 8CS releases but it really seems to work well with sherry casks from what I have seen. ...Nose: Light and dry with malty fruitiness at first. Gradually deepens into darker tones of tobacco leaves, cigar box and a whiff of wood smoke or toasted oak. Taste: Full bodied and slightly brooding. Fruity caramel sweetness meets soft spice, a touch of burnt caramel and dark chocolate richness. Finish: Medium to long.
