Chateau Arton La Reserves Haut Armagnac (700ml)
Given that Haut-Armagnac accounts for a mere 1.5% of Armagnac's total production, Château Arton is something of an anomaly. It is one of the few, and certainly the most prominent producers in the exclusive terroir that was ravaged by phylloxera in the late 1800s, leading to the mass uprooting of vineyards. The region never quite recovered. Organically grown Colombard and Ugni Blanc grapes are at the heart of the Chateau's 'Reserve', a blend of brandies aged for at least six years (others say four to eleven). The aromas open with dried fruits, cigar box, spiced raisins, cocoa and a touch of leather, followed by middle-weight flavours of candied fruits and a delicate succulence, countered by spicy oak, leather and tobacco. Neither too heavy nor too light, this 'contemporary' style straddles a line between middle-aged cognac and traditional armagnac, offering the finesse and elegance of one while retaining some of the depth and fruit-cake character of the latter. The style is reflected in the abstract label design, another break from tradition, suggesting a concerted effort to create a 'modern' Armagnac intended to introduce this spirit to a new generation of drinkers. Pair it with a chocolate tart. 45% Alc./Vol.
