In Spain, vines go to purgatory in Priorat. Steep staircases of dark slate, shale and thin bands of red clay where machinery is impossible and hand harvests are a health hazard have proven to extricate the most interesting characteristics of indigenous varietals like Garnacha (Grenache) and Cariñena (Carignan).

The essence of these varietals is extracted by the BCN distillery, located in the quiet mountains of Priorat. Using a copper four-plate Arnold Holstein distillation column, only wine lees of the top DOQ Priorat and DO Montsant wines are used. An all-local botanical list includes juniper berries, rosemary, fennel, pine shoots and especially figs combined with lemon peels from South-Catalonia to produce what's been described as a "mountain-range Mediterranean gin". 40% Alc./Vol.
