When done right, wine casks can offer something a little off the beaten track. By most reports, Aberfeldy are leading the way with their "Wine Cask Series". First a 15-year-old was released, but today we’ll be looking at the Aberfeldy 18 Years Sangiovese Red Wine Cask Finish. Today’s 18-year-old was finished in ex-Sangiovese red wine casks sourced from Tuscany’s Valdarno di Sopra region. I don’t mind wine, like at all, but I won’t pretend to be familiar with this particular region either. Instead we’ll just dive right in... Delicate, yet nicely balanced, especially for a wine matured single malt. That may sound snobbish, but it can be a challenge to not turn whisky into winesky.
