Ethereal and floral, with fine tannins and a long, mountain-fresh palate.

William Downie is a pioneer of minimal-intervention, site-driven Pinot Noir in Australia. Based at Guendulain Farm in Yarragon, where he and wife Rachel Needoba planted a high-density 2-hectare vineyard in 2007, he also leases top sites like Bull Swamp and Camp Hill. Downie is known for his meticulous vineyard work and dedication to expressing place through Pinot Noir.
Planted in 1998 at 250m elevation, Camp Hill is the highest site between the Strzelecki and Great Dividing Ranges. Predominantly MV6 with some 115, the north-facing vineyard sits on rocky red volcanic soils, producing wines of finesse and delicacy. The 2024 release is richer than previous vintages, yet remains true to Camp Hill’s character—expect an aromatic and ethereal wine with a powerful palate and long fine tannins.

Other Reviews....
Almost shy at first, a flutter of mint and herbs, florals and spice, not much, all hinting at what’s to come. Mid-weighted, the palate strewn with dark fruit and spice, a slight green edge coming through – almost a mix of charred radicchio and green peppercorn, but not too much, so it does blend back into the wine. There’s a lot to enjoy but it will be even better in another year or so. Drink by 2033.
