2024 William Downie Bull Swamp Pinot Noir
Ripe dark fruits and spice with a rich palate, fine tannins and an earth like finish.
William Downie is a pioneer of minimal-intervention, site-driven Pinot Noir in Australia. Based at Guendulain Farm in Yarragon, where he and wife Rachel Needoba planted a high-density 2-hectare vineyard in 2007, he also leases top sites like Bull Swamp and Camp Hill. Downie is known for his meticulous vineyard work and dedication to expressing place through Pinot Noir.
Planted in 1981 on red volcanic soils at 150m elevation, this dry-grown vineyard features four parcels of Pinot Noir: two north-facing MV6 blocks, an Abel block, and a sheltered south-facing MV6 parcel. Expect ripe dark fruits and spice with fine tannins and an earth like finish.

What a wine. Everything has come together harmoniously – the enticing aromas all spicy, floral and earthy, the flavours all juicy cherries and exotic spices with blood orange acidity. The tannins are beautiful, shapely and supple yet oh-so fine and the acid just teases out the finish to linger long. Lovely drink here folks. Alas, will sell out in a flash – be quick. Drink by 2036.
