2024 Soumah Single Vineyard Hexham Savarro
Savarro is an ancient green-skinned, tight-bunched grape variety that was first recorded in the 10th century. Over the millennia it travelled to all corners of Europe and was then extensively used to create many of today’s modern varieties. The cool climate of the Yarra Valley is perfect for the Savarro, with Soumah’s take on the variety cool tank fermented to retain fresh aromatics and aged on lees to promote texture.
Brilliant water like core with highlights of green around the edges. Elevated aromas of pear and red apple infused with fresh herbs are followed by hints of lime and stony mineral notes. The intensely flavoured palate features scrumptious pear, green to red apple and lime fruits over a fresh herb and flinty mineral laced back drop. Nicely shaped front half with crisp acidity leading into a ravishingly moreish finish that’s long and dry.
Drink over the next 1-2 years.

Other Reviews......
Savagnin is the variety. Matured on lees is part of the methodology.
A pale, lighter wine but there’s mettle of texture, grip and swagger of chalkiness, in amongst red apple, green pear, tonic water and waxy cumquat characters. So too a little green almond and cashew nut through it all. A slightly breathy, marzipan note to finish. There’s plenty on here, the texture a highlight and concentration at a lighter weight level impressive. You can say ‘good drinking’ with ease here. Drink 2025-2030.
