Maturation is in French oak hogsheads, 82% of them new, for a period of fourteen months. The fruit is entirely from the Barossa Valley. An opaque, dark blood red colour, the nose reveals aromas of chocolate, plums, smoked meats, superbly integrated oak, leather, cocoa powder, florals, blueberries, spices and a touch of vanilla. This is absolutely seamless and so beautifully balanced that there is not a hair out of place. Quite juicy acidity and a long persistent finish, there is good energy here and a pleasing freshness. The wine finishes with abundant, powdery tannins. To be enjoyed over the next twenty to thirty years. Drink 2026-2056.

Penfolds' 'Red Winemaking Trial', which launched in May 2000 with the 1997 vintage, has built a solid reputation for its harmonious, concentrated wines that have the ability to age beautifully in the cellar. Deep purple-splashed crimson in the glass with finely tuned aromas of blackberry, blueberry and black cherry fruits, along with baking spices, violets, dark chocolate, espresso, crushed earth, anise, cedar, dried meats and bay leaf. Full bodied and fruit pure, with a velvety gradient across its length, a beautiful flow of fruit, fine melt-in-the-mouth tannins and a bright, fresh mineral cadence. It's a wonderful, harmonious release that will repay the patient. Drink by 2050.

The 2024 RWT Bin 798 was sourced exclusively from the Barossa Valley, where the 2024 vintage performed exceptionally. The initials RWT stand for "Red Winemaking Trial," the name given to the project internally when developmental work began in the early 1990s. Now no longer a "trial," RWT Shiraz was launched in May 2000 with the 1997 vintage. Aromatically, the wine leads with a profusion of gravelly, earthy red and purple fruit, loads of tannins, pencilly oak and, just generally, loads of everything—lashings. I tend to respect the confidence of this cuvée; it is ever this way—muscly and structural, with an abundance of fruit but just as much tannin. It feels like the place more than the house. It matured for 14 months in French oak hogsheads (82% new, 18% one-year-old). 14.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. Drink 2026 2044.
