2024 Penfolds Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon

A rich, sturdy Bin 407 with compact, tightly knit tannins and a long finish.

Dense inky black heart with an equally deep dark red black hue. Youthful blackcurrant and liquorice scents stream through the nostrils with impressive intensity followed by bay leaf, vanillin cedar, earth and subtle spicy tobacco notes. Rich blackcurrant, liquorice and ripe mulberry fruits carry an opulent yet slightly inky feel with vanillin cedar, subtle tobacco, earthy black olive and bay leaf accents the undercard. A compact, tightly knit tannin structure imparts some firmness across what is a long, sturdy finish.
Drink over the next 8-10 years.

Five South Australian wine regions, one red grape variety and two types of new and seasoned oak is pretty much the quintessential Penfolds recipe. At its heart, 407 is all about a varietal interpretation and hence the fruit comes first and it’s striking and irresistibly aromatic in scents of blue fruits, black cherries, plum, earth, dry leaves and a peppery spice, anise intensity. The palate delivers all that the nose promises and more with layers of chocolate, dark liquorice, hints of cumin, nutmeg and dark spice and more, fitted to robust, fine tannins. Oak – 12 months in French (16% new) and American (5% new) is as schmick as it comes, adding one layer of many in this multi-layered wine. Structurally, it’s solid as a rock, the kind of frame to build a long future on. 2026 – 2043.

The 2024 Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon is a multiregional Cabernet blend, this year from Coonawarra, Padthaway, McLaren Vale, Wrattonbully and Barossa Valley. The wine matured for 12 months in French (16% new, 36% seasoned) and American (5% new, 43% seasoned) oak hogsheads. Aromatically, the wine is perfumed and leafy, layered with dark fruit and an abundance of spices. This is excellent, better than I ever recall seeing it, primarily perhaps because it feels distinctly varietal and fresh, leafy and detailed. It bears all the hallmarks of the Penfolds house style, of course, but this takes a backseat to the fruit, which I appreciate. This is excellent. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. Drink 2026-2044.
