2023 Wendouree Shiraz Mataro
Other Reviews….
A blend of Shiraz (66%) and Mataro from 1893 Central, and 1919 Eastern and 1920 bush vines. I opened this Thursday night and had a quick taste and I’ve now come back to it Saturday afternoon. I don’t usually do this, not least because I don’t want to cut Fluffy Hair Adair’s grass, though it’s been interesting in a way. I’ve pretty much the same opinion of the wine now as I did then, though it has fleshed out and settled a bit as a result of extended airing.
Quite minty, with honey and black fruit, flowering basil, nuts, cedar and cocoa. It has some orange juice tang to acidity and flavour, perhaps a little mead-like in a way, almond paste and orange peel, a light grainy grip to tannin with a sort of sooty feel, blue fruit and sour cherry on a finish of solid length. It’s a little bit edgy, though it’s still a good wine of character and interest. Drink 2027 - 2036+.
