2023 Matane Negroamaro
A generously fruited Negroamaro that’s both juicy and chewy in it’s feel.
Matané sources Negroamaro from various vineyards between the towns of Manduria and Lecce, very close to the heel of the boot on the Salento Peninsula. This southernmost part of Puglia is also Italy’s easternmost area with dark red soils and abundant Mediterranean sunshine. The climate is mild in winter, with adequate rainfall, but it is also very hot in summer with little rainfall. This wine represents the new winemaking approach in Puglia, with more moderate alcohol levels and gentler extractions. Negroamaro loves hot and dry conditions, and it grows particularly well in the calcareous, high-limestone soils of the area.
Deep black dark red colour with a dark red hue. Elevated morello cherry, liquorice and black plum aromas mix with whiffs of vanilla, scorched earth and cinnamon spice. Rich morello cherry, black plum, liquorice and vanilla flavours are both juicy and chewy in their feel. Some earth and cinnamon spice elements linger across the back half. Ripe sturdy tannin structure with a generously fruited mid length finish.
Drink over the next 2-3 years.
