2023 Izway Harold Shiraz
The 2022/2023 growing season in the Barossa Valley continued the region’s run of cool vintages, with near-record rainfall—53 days of rain in spring alone—delivering exceptional vineyard health. Warm but moderate summer conditions, with no extreme heat days, allowed for perfect ripening and flexibility in harvest timing. A late start to picking meant fruit arrived in the cool of autumn, with excellent condition and balance.
The 2023 Harold underent wild fermentation for 9–11 days in stainless steel, with extraction managed via manual plunging, pigeage, delestage, and open-air pump-overs. Basket pressing preceded maturation in seasoned barrels, where malolactic fermentation completed. The wine shows an intense and distinctive nose of tobacco leaf, tamarind, celeriac, and white pepper, with a palate of dark cherry, orange rind, and Campari-like florals. Assertive tannins and spice frame its pure, energetic character, ensuring graceful aging potential.
