Giacomo Conterno is one of those names that immediately grabs the attention of anyone passionate about Piedmont wines. Known for crafting some of the most iconic Barolos in the world, this family-run estate has built its reputation on a commitment to tradition and quality. Their wines are all about power, precision, and aging potential, but they never lose that soulful connection to the land.

Current custodian Roberto Conterno keenly appreciates what being the benchmark for Barolo can mean in a commercial world that makes such a rarity of his wines. In the laboratory and in production, Roberto has adapted and refined equipment like his utterly unique destemmer to operate at remarkable levels of sensitivity. Back into the vineyard, and continuous trials like the massale selections, must pass sufficient time to satisfy Roberto’s fastidious expectations.

Other Reviews....
The 2023 Barbera d'Alba Vigna Francia is fine, elegant and nuanced. Silky lines wrap around a core of red cherry/plum fruit, blood orange, chalk, mint, white pepper and incense. Understated and classy, the 2023 has a lot to offer. This is a relatively restrained vintage for the Francia Barbera. I would give it a bit of time in the cellar to come together. Finessed, impossibly silky tannins and clean mineral undertones support the resonant finish. Drink 2026-2034.

Antonio Galloni - Vinous

A lush wine that’s supple and fruity. Plums, leafy lightness and a floral touch on the nose. A smooth palate with a full body, crisp and integrated acidity and a long, fruity finish. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Barberba Francia was tasted as a barrel sample and will be bottled in May. In the glass, it boasts a youthful purple/ruby color and leads with dark stony mineral aromatics as well as violets, fresh plum, berries, sapidity, and herbs, with a resinous feel on the palate. The palate is focused and structured, with a bright red-fruited highlights, fine tannins, a refreshing spine of acidity, and a long-lasting floral and mineral textured finish.
