2023 Dune Blewitt Springs Shiraz
Dune is a project of brothers Duncan and Peter Lloyd (next generation Coriole) using fruit sourced from their vineyard in the Blewitt Springs sub-region of McLaren Vale. Blewitt Springs is known for deep sandy soils on yellow clays where Shiraz typically ripens later than other parts of McLaren Vale. It typically produces Shiraz of lifted dark fruit, floral and meaty notes, the tannin is fine yet chalky and the wines are often medium bodied rather than full.
Matured in seasoned oak for 12 months. Impenetrable inky black colour with a deep dark purple hue. Freshly crushed blackberry, liquorice and ripe blueberry aromas sail out glass followed by some dark plum, vanillin cedar, inky earth and peppered fennel notes. Refined yet richly fruited the mid weighted palate is decorated with juicy blackberry, blueberry and liquorice fruits. Lying underneath are more savoury components of spicy vanillin cedar, earthy fennel and pepper. Slightly inky feel with grainy tannins and a subtle meatiness to the medium to long conclusion.
Cellar 5-6 years.
Alc. 14.2%
Other Reviews.....
Fermented with whole bunches, whole berries and crushed fruit, with 12 months in seasoned foudre (75%) and hogsheads (25%). Darkly wrought fruit, spicy and savoury, though not cresting out of medium weight, with a refined array of red fruits emerging with air. Powdered spices – star anise, allspice, clove, cassia – black cherry, dark-roast coffee bean, lavender, violet and nori. Delicious and, like all the Dune wines, truly exceptional value. Drink by 2033.
