This Margaux third growth property has been bought and sold numerous times over its history, but it was after the purchase in 1955 by the Zuger family that the fortunes of the property took a turn for the good. At the time the property was in poor shape, with only 7 hectares under vine. Now the 23.5 hectares vineyard is planted to 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, and is easily delivering at its classified level and often more. Malescot-St.-Exupery should be on the radar for every lover of rich and expressive Cabernet. And perhaps the reason they aren’t as highly collected is that it’s really been just the last few years they’ve elevated their wines to new levels. The consistency of the wines from 2014-2019 is remarkable, and to date the wines have been extremely well priced.

Other Reviews....
One of the most suave, classy vintages from this estate in some years, the 2023 Malescot St. Exupery is a blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. Wafting from the glass with aromas of cherries, berries, licorice and pencil shavings, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and succulent, with good depth at the core, supple tannins and a harmonious, integrated profile. Part of the blend is maturing in foudre.

The 2023 Malescot Saint Exupéry was cropped at 38hL/ha, picked a day later than the previous year. Lea Zuger told me that they now use six foudres installed in November, meaning there is 60% new oak—less than other vintages. Barrel-maturation will be 14 to 16 months. Whereas in 2022, nearly all the estate’s fruit went into the Grand Vin, this year it represents 75% of the volume. Displaying blackberry and briar on the nose, this demands some coaxing from the glass. There’s just a light, confit-like aroma in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine structure, slightly powdery tannins, modest weight and noticeably fresh acidity and salinity, the latter especially prominent toward the finish. More classically hewn compared to the 2022, this will require five or six years in bottle. Classy. Drink 2029-2050.

This has a very deep and beautiful palate with cherries, chocolate, hazelnut and orange peel. Pretty blackcurrants and blue berries, too. Medium body. The finish has gorgeous al-dente fruit at the end and is always subtle. Open tannins. A blend of 58% cabernet sauvignon, 37% merlot, and 5% petit verdot.

Rocking red and black fruits, spicy wood, savory herbs, and sandalwood notes all define the 2023 Château Malescot Saint Exupéry, and it's medium-bodied, supple, and elegant on the palate, with beautiful tannins. It's another impressively textured, balanced Margaux in the vintage that has ample charm and character.

Black cherries, blackberries, licorice, chocolate, and flowers create an opulent, deep, dark, styled wine. The fruits are ripe, soft, polished, sweet, clean, and pure. There is weight, with ample lift, making it fresh, as well as fruity. he amount of new. French oak for the aging has been reduced from 80% to 60%, which has added more complexity to the wine. The wine is a blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot. 14% ABV. Harvesting took place September 19-October 10. Drink from 2029-2055.
