Dense inky black heart with a deep dark red black hue. Wafting through the nostrils are heady scents of ripe blackberry, liquorice and dark chocolate which are complimented by some vanillin oak, earthy mocha and spice notes. Rich, bold and lush, the weighty palate is awash with opulent blackberry, liquorice and ripe black cherry fruits. Sturdily built tannin structure with spicy vanillin oak, scorched earth and blackpepper the undercard. Concludes long and sumptuous yet with a robust feel.

From sandy soils, fermented in oak vats, then raised in 25/10% new American and French oak, with the balance one to four years old, for 16 months. Stepping up in the range, this is a big jump in quality and character from the Little Road. And it’s worth the extra dollars – if you can stretch. Darkly fruited, oak nestling in well with a fine line of vanilla and ginger, scenting boysenberry, blackberry pastille, cherry compote and baking spices, along with roast hazelnut, high-cocoa chocolate and a tarry, pumpernickel note. Tannins are polished, refined, carrying long. Drink by 2032.
