2022 Occhipinti Siccagno Nero d'Avola
Occhipinti is one of the hottest names in Italian wines, and their tiny production is highly sought after. Situated a mere 15km from the Mediterranean, the vineyards are 250m above sea level planted to Frappato and Nero d’Avola. Winemaking is natural and hands off, with fermentation occurring spontaneously, no temperature control, no fining, no filtration and only minimal sulphur additions at bottling.
Arianna Occhipinti refers to her Nero d'Avola as Siccagno, a grape she feels represents so much about the wild yet fresh and elegant side of Sicily. The average age of the vines is around 35 years, planted to a sandy vineyard with calcareous rocks at 280 meters above sea level. Wild fermentation occurs in cement tanks, and the grapes spend 25 days macerating on skins before pressing and maturation for two years in large 30HL Austrian oak barrels.
Other Reviews....
The 2022 Nero d'Avola Siccagno 22 entices with an earthy, darkly floral bouquet that blends spiced blackberries, crushed rocks, savory herbs and nuances of fresh tobacco. It coasts across the palate with ease, soft and round, yet a zesty core of citrus-tinged acidity and minerals adds tension toward the close. The 2022 finishes long and pleasantly tart, with a hint of tangerine and sour cherry that creates a chewy sensation. Drink 2026-2034.
