2022 Occhipinti Pettineo (PT) Frappato
Occhipinti is one of the hottest names in Italian wines, and their tiny production is highly sought after. Situated a mere 15km from the Mediterranean, the vineyards are 250m above sea level planted to Frappato and Nero d’Avola. Winemaking is natural and hands off, with fermentation occurring spontaneously, no temperature control, no fining, no filtration and only minimal sulphur additions at bottling.
Located beyond the Serra San Bartolo ridge, Pettineo is distinguished by its deep marine sand layers (50–60 cm) with minimal limestone presence. The nearly 60-year-old vines, originally head-trained and now trellised, produce a Frappato that is notably elegant and fruit-driven. The sandy soils contribute to the wine's silky tannins and lively acidity, making it the most approachable and aromatic among the trio of single-contrada Frappatos.
Other Reviews....
The 2022 Frappato PT (Pettineo) is savory, with herbal resonance and a hint of concrete up front that complicates a core of vivid black cherry. Juicy and cool toned in character, it shows depths of ripe wild berry fruit underscored by tactile minerals and a citrus twang toward the close. The finish is long and full of tension, with a bitter blackberry tinge and nuance of lavender. Drink 2025-2034.
