2022 Occhipinti Fossa di Lupo (FL) Frappato
Occhipinti is one of the hottest names in Italian wines, and their tiny production is highly sought after. Situated a mere 15km from the Mediterranean, the vineyards are 250m above sea level planted to Frappato and Nero d’Avola. Winemaking is natural and hands off, with fermentation occurring spontaneously, no temperature control, no fining, no filtration and only minimal sulphur additions at bottling.
As one of Arianna's foundational vineyards, Fossa di Lupo features sandy soils with red to chestnut tones and a significant presence of surface limestone rocks. Beneath 40 cm of sand lies a layer of solid, hard limestone. The northeast-facing albarello-trained vines benefit from the cooling breezes of the Hyblaean Mountains, resulting in a Frappato that balances ripe red fruit with a firm, austere backbone and vibrant acidity. This site consistently yields wines of structure and longevity.
