2022 Occhipinti Bombolieri (BB) Frappato
Occhipinti is one of the hottest names in Italian wines, and their tiny production is highly sought after. Situated a mere 15km from the Mediterranean, the vineyards are 250m above sea level planted to Frappato and Nero d’Avola. Winemaking is natural and hands off, with fermentation occurring spontaneously, no temperature control, no fining, no filtration and only minimal sulphur additions at bottling.
Perched on a limestone-rich outcrop facing the Serra San Bartolo, Bombolieri's Vigna Strada is characterized by a mere 25 cm of sandy topsoil overlaying solid limestone. This minimal soil depth, combined with the high mineral content, imparts a linear, saline-driven profile to the Frappato, showcasing pronounced acidity and a taut structure. The vineyard's varying hues—from deep chestnut to stark white—mirror the wine's dynamic interplay between fruit purity and mineral tension.
Other Reviews....
The 2022 Frappato Bombolieri (Bb) is dark and dusty, with a whiff of ashen stones and flowery underbrush elevating its crushed blackberry fruit. Elegance and silky smoothness define the palate, where a tension-building blend of tart wild berries, brisk acidity and a hint of rosemary emerge toward the close. A twang of tropical citrus and saline concentration linger as this finishes with a gentle tannic tug and cascade of inner florals. The Bombolieri hails from limestone-rich soils that lend an amazing vertical feel to the experience. Drink 2026-2034.
