ABV: 14.5%

Established in 1982 by Rick Kinzbrunner after experience in Napa, Bordeaux, and the King Valley, Giaconda has become one of Australia’s most celebrated boutique estates. The 4-hectare vineyard, now managed with his son Nathan, is certified organic and focused on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, and Nebbiolo. High-altitude granitic soils, excellent winemaking, and ageing in a granite cave deliver wines of extraordinary purity, complexity, and finesse. Red wines see extended maceration on skins to develop finer tannins, with maturation taking place in French Oak barrels for up to 24 months. The wines are only ever moved via gravity or gas, retaining all the pristine fruit that they work so hard to produce in the winery and the vineyard. Matured in Amphorae and old oak, the Nebbiolo has bright tannins that enhance its pure fruit flavors. Expect notes of roasted chestnuts, rose petals, forest floor, dark orange chocolate, and tar.

The 2022 Nebbiolo comes from a single vineyard planted at elevation. It is very shy to start but comes out of its shell over time with perfumed cherry, raspberry, dried lavender and potpourri aromas, along with subtle meaty tones. Also quite savory and unyielding on the palate, its firm, gravelly tannins show strong asphalt and dried herb flavors. Tarry elements add impressive power and length to the finish. This is a sleeper. Drink 2030 - 2042.

Offers power and grace with truly beautiful perfume and aromatics. They are a feature of the wine, so too some of the firmest tannins in the business. I gave the wine four hours and a decent decant before a reveal. The scent beguiles in aromatic rose, pressed flowers, cranberry, cherry, violet and winter herbs. This is a youngster in nebbiolo terms and, while the structure is set, it will take its own time for the rest like a true nebbiolo: red fruits, rosehip, anise, dusty cocoa, earth and gentle woodsmoke before a rousing long finish dressed in amaro and bitter-sweet herbs. A wine for tomorrow rather than today. Drink 2025-2043.

Savory, earth-driven aromas of cherries, mahogany and citrus peel as well as tea leaves, walnuts and terra-cotta. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, finely tuned tannins. Bright acidity leads into a mouthwatering, tactile mouthfeel with layer upon layer of red fruit and notes of herbal liqueur, potpourri and citrus peel. An excellent nebbiolo that will unravel for years to come. Drinkable now but best from 2030.

I tasted this alongside the 2021 Nebbiolo a couple of months ago, and gee I like this 2022. Such evolution in style, with this vintage being much finer and more transparent. I’m tasting it again now and I’m still so impressed. It’s a Nebbiolo that will stand tall in any company.
Red cherry, a distinct almond paste character here, which I love, dried roses, a little spice, liquorice root, and above all, such perfume. It’s medium to full-bodied, red fruits and almond, some fragrant black tea, a distinctly ‘mineral’ feel to acidity gives it a finely etched feel, tannin has a pumice stone texture and grip, though while it’s assertive it sits very well in the wine. It’s quite stony too, and the finish is very long and precise, a subtle orange peel flavour in the aftertaste. Textbook Nebbiolo here. It’s superb. Drink 2027 - 2037+
