Veneto, Italy’s north-eastern region with Venice its capital, is home to the Pinot Grigio grape variety. Each year, since the 10th century, The Carnival of Venice is celebrated in the San Marco Square, with people dancing and feasting behind elaborate and exotic masks which is where this wine takes it’s name - La Maschera (the mask). Protected from the harsh northern European climate by the Alps, these cooler climes are somewhat similar to the coastal maritime regions of the Limestone Coast where the grapes for this wine were harvested.
A consistently excellent Pinot Grigio, the juice for this wine was wild fermented on full solids in old French oak where it remained on lees for 5 months to enhance the texture.
Brilliant water like colour with a subtle tinge of green around the edges. Pear and red apple scents jump out of the glass mixing with hints of dried honey, quince and spice. Delicious ripe pear and red apple fruits show wonderful intensity with quince, delicate honeysuckle and spice characters lying underneath. Beautifully textured it finishes dry with a burst of fresh acidity on the long tasty conclusion.
