2021 Syrahmi Demi Shiraz
Fermented with 70% whole bunches followed by ageing in a mixture of new and used French oak puncheons for a period of 13 months, then stainless steel for a further 8 months. Midnight black dark purple colour with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Fragrant spicy dark plum, liquorice and ripe blueberry scents infused with clove sail out of the glass followed by some earthy incense like notes and peppered meats. Medium to full in body yet light on its feet the palate is decorated with succulent dark plum, liquorice and blueberry fruits which overlay notions of clove, vanillin cedar and peppered earth characters. Excellent concentration and freshness with slightly firmish tannins and a long rich yet very savoury aftertaste.
Drink over the next 4-5 years.
Alc. 13.6%
Other Reviews....
I spent a few days in Heathcote late last week and I’m accordingly fired up about the region but then, I’ve always loved the place. It’s humble country, it’s old country, it’s real. Adam Foster aka Syrahmi takes grapes for his Demi Shiraz from a range of sites around the region and if ever you wanted a taster of what the region does, this is it. I’ll have more to say on this in future but for now: Adam Foster is a force to be reckoned with. He belongs on any and every Best Producers in The Land list.
Complex and powerful at once. Smoky and herbal with crushed rock, violet, black olive and clove-like notes, all woodsy and good, but with sweet/rich redcurrant and black cherry flavour bursting through. There’s tannin but it’s velvety; the acidity keeps things both crisp and crunchy at once. It’s a top wine to drink, warm but intensely more-ish. Drink 2022 - 2027.
