2020 Le Volte dell'Ornellaia

A blend of Merlot, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon with the different varietals fermented separately in small steel tanks to maintain their varietal characteristics. The wine was then aged for 10 months, partly in barriques used previously for Ornellaia and partly in concrete tanks to obtain the perfect balance between tannic structure and an expression of fresh fruit.

A beautiful modern expression of Tuscany.

Midnight black heart with a deep bright dark red black tinged hue. Nosing reveals elevated aromatics of red to black currant and red liquorice which intermingle with fragrant herb, tobacco, light dusty cedar and spice notes. Mid weighted and showing beautiful refinement, the palate is decorated with delicious ripe red to black currant and red cherry fruits which overlay a back drop of spicy cedar, earthy tobacco characters and dried herbs. Bright, fleshy feel possessing an attractive freshness with nicely integrated fine grained tannins and a finish that’s long, polished and very savoury.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

Attractive aromas of blue fruit with slate and black-licorice character. It’s full-bodied with juicy fruit and an orange-peel undertone. Wet earth, some fresh sage and rosemary, too. I like the Mediterranean flavors in this vintage. Drink or hold.

Bright and young on the nose, smells like freshly-picked red cherries, almost like sweets, blackcurrant and cherry sweets braced by bramble fruits and soft perfume. Softly creamy and chalky on the palate, strawberries and red cherries have a chalky texture and quite a perfume to the flavour profile. There is fruit there but then it's subdued a little by a savoury wood aspect, sweet vanilla and spiced clove that edges the palate. Feels a little disconnected at the moment, not all in harmony, but it has a charm to it and will be approachable earlier. One that will give a lot of pleasure.
