Kalleske’s Greenock Shiraz is a single vineyard wine produced from low yielding vines on the Kalleske estate at Greenock, in the North-Western Barossa Valley. Cuttings for these vines originate from a vineyard planted on the property in the late 1800’s.
According to Troy Kalleske 2020 was a vintage of amazing quality that delivered fruit with rich colours and intense, robust flavours. Troy goes on to say “The 2020 Greenock Shiraz is one of our best ever. Period! It possibly sounds like an arrogant statement, but as I (Troy) write this, I honestly believe this is one of the greatest wines to come from our Kalleske winery in the 20 vintages we’ve been making wine.” The downside is that yields were some of the lowest ever in the Barossa, down 50% on average due to a combination of early mild frosts, a notably windier period during flowering that led to poor fruit set and an overall dry growing season.
Certified organic and biodynamic the wine was matured in a mixture of new (35%) and seasoned French and American oak barrels for a period of 14 months.
Pours an impenetrable inky black colour with a very deep black dark red hue. Wafting through the nostrils are trademark Barossa aromatics of dark plum, blackberry and liquorice with dark chocolate, vanillin oak and spicy mocha also chiming in. Rich, concentrated and opulent, the well endowed palate is engulfed with lavish dark plum, liquorice and blackberry fruits which are underscored by spicy vanillin cedar, fennel, flashes of earthy mocha and pepper. Bright acidity and sturdily framed tannins provide the wine with both energy and structure. Ample power with a long generous yet robust conclusion.
