2020 Brave Souls The Able Seaman Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre
Julia Weirich in collaboration with the Sons of Eden boys, has produced a superb GSM under her Able Seaman label. Julia is German in heritage but gypsy at heart, having worked all over the world, honing her skills in wineries including Bass Phillip in Australia, Yealands in New Zealand, Le Grappin in Burgundy and Mulderbosch in South Africa. Upon returning to Australia she set about making wine for herself with the help of the well-known dynamic team behind Sons of Eden.
A blend of 59% Grenache, 27% Shiraz and 14% Mourvedre, fruit was sourced from three different sub regions of the Barossa with 20% whole bunch inclusion. Each vineyard parcel was fermented and matured separately with aging taking place in seasoned oak barrels for a period of 10 months.
Dense black dark red heart with a deep dark red hue. An alluring mix of dark raspberry, spicy plum and liquorice aromas greet the nostrils with dried herb and peppered earth notes also chiming in. Rich spicy dark raspberry, liquorice and plum fruits have a plush feel with notions of dried herbs, earth and pepper lying underneath. Velvet smooth tannins finishing long and fleshy.
Drink over the next 3-4 years.
Alc. 14.5%
Other Reviews…..
A blend of 59/27/14% grenache/shiraz/mourvèdre, from Rowland Flat, Menglers Hill and Light Pass respectively. Aged in seasoned oak barrels for 10 months before blending. Plump and juicy aromatics bound forth – plum jam along with red cherry and mulberry lift. Packed firmly with spice and earthen notes, a little purple floral note flitting around above. Great density, flow and plush fruit presence. Lovely drinking. Drink by 2029
