Fruit from the original 1969 Block 1 cabernet, from the southwest corner. Hand harvested, destemmed and crushed into half-tonne open fermenters, hand plunged twice daily until fermentation complete, with some extended times on skins. Gravity-filled to 2 French oak Bordeaux-shaped barrels, one new and one 2yo, for 18 months. There is such clarity to this wine, from the exuberant colour to the masterful combination of flavours within, centred exclusively on this majestic variety. Blackberries and currants, bay leaves and lead pencil plus deep-etched cedary oak. It has a juiciness thanks to the acidity, and while it is fuller bodied, as with all YY reds, a defining feature is beautiful tannins: here they are, insistent yet super fine. Drink by 2044.
