2019 Wendouree Shiraz Mataro
Other Reviews….
This blend contains 55% Shiraz and 45% Mataro grapes coming from 1893 Central, 1919 Eastern vineyard paintings as well as 1920 Eastern vineyard bush vines.
GW: Meaty and earthy, juniper berry and lemon zest, redcurrant and raspberry, with a coverlet of cedar oak. It’s medium-bodied, dry tannin with a perfume of lemon and orange peel, maybe a little liquorice, almost moving into a tangy amaro character. Tannin is dry and slightly abrasive, a crushed hazelnut character to them, distinct savoury note, and a lively finish of solid length. No shortage of character here! Needs a bit of time to roll out, but so individual and charismatic. 94+ points.
MB: Savoury red of game meat, red cherry/raspberry fruit characters, cola and paperbark, undergrowth and truffle. Scents and flavours in synch, a slim and trimmed palate with sheets of fine, very firm, amaro-laced tannins lending structure. Precise and fine, complex and succulent to the max. An architectural wine of great dimension and detail. Wow wine. Drink 2024 - 2037+.
