2019 Port Phillip Estate Balnarring Pinot Noir
Balnarring is Port Phillip Estate’s second site which was purchased in 2007 but planted in 1997. The original plantings of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir were added to by a further paddock of high density planted Pinot Noir. Fermented with the inclusion of a portion of wholes bunches this wine was matured in French oak barriques (18% new) for a period of 11 months.
Intensely flavoured, expansive and supple this is a highly moreish Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir.
Semi translucent dark red colour with black tinged edges and a light red hue. Perfumed like scents of violets, dark cherries and anise make for a very enticing sniff with ensuing forest floor, dried herb, meaty game like notes and spicy cedar adding complexity. The alluring palate has an expansive feel with a peacocks tail like power wave of rich dark cherry, anise and ripe strawberry fruits holding sway over a back drop of forest floor, a subtle meatiness, infusions of fresh herbs and spicy cedar. Supple and fleshy texturally with polished tannins and fresh acidity providing a great framework. Finishes very long and moreish.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.
Alc. 13.5%
Other Reviews…..
While medium bodied at best, with smooth and supple tannins, this packs a lot of flavour and depth. Floats between florals, spicy dark cherries and heady forest-floor aromas. Oak is neatly integrated. It's compelling, complex, lithe and a lovely drink. Drink by 2033.

Jane Faulkner – James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion
This opens taut, savoury and complex but as it breathes the fruit seems sweeter and fuller. It seems serious and stern at first; generous to the point of deliciousness in time. That said, a healthy amount of spice and twig-like notes remain heightened throughout and its tannin never really lets go of the reins. In short, it’s a joyous Pinot Noir with substance. It works now and it will also work if you wait. Drink 2021-2026+
