2019 Penny’s Hill Skeleton Key Shiraz
Skeleton Key is sourced from the original Penny’s Hill vineyard, its slightly higher elevation means it enjoys a climate a little cooler than the rest of McLaren Vale. This ensures more consistent temperatures throughout the ripening period, allowing Shiraz to reach optimum ripeness with minimum stress. Individual blocks were harvested and vinified separately to best express the variation in terroir. Fruit was crushed and fermented on skins in open fermenters for 10 days prior to pressing. Maturation was in French oak of which approximately 35% was new oak. The balance was matured in 1, 2 and 3 year old oak and after 18 months the final wine was blended.
Rich, opulent McLaren Vale fruit shines through a brooding structure.
Outstanding colour featuring an impenetrable inky black heart and an equally deep dark red black hue. Heady aromatics of blackberry, dark plum and liquorice soar through the olfactory senses with dark chocolate, toasty vanillin oak and spicy mocha notes ensuing. Boasting magnificent concentration, the lavishly rich, power packed palate is saturated with cascading waves of blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruit. Lying underneath is spicy vanillin oak, traces of earth, some mocha and pepper. Contrasting the wines opulence is a firm bed of tannins that form a sculptured like framework and add a muscular feel to the wealth of fruit. Concludes exceptionally long and intense.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.
