Established in 2002 by Dom Torzi and Tim Freeland, the Old Plains Wine Co. utilizes fruit from some of the last old vine vineyards in the Adelaide Plains region which were generally planted post WWII by Italian migrants & returned servicemen. These vineyards remained intact until the mid 1980’s when many were uprooted to make way for market gardens, almond orchards and housing. Growers generally left an acre or two, or a couple of rows for the family wine.
Matured for 18 months in French oak barriques of which 40% was new. Impenetrable inky black in colour with a deep dark red black hue. Potent black cherry, liquorice and black plum fruits jump out of the glass followed by smoky vanillin cedar, scorched earth, fennel and blackpepper notes. Rich, lush and full, the palate is saturated with black plum, liquorice and black cherry fruits. Lightly smoked vanillin oak, fennel and peppered meat characters lie underneath. Silky smooth tannins finishing long and voluptuous.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.
