2019 Neldner Road by Dave Powell Chatterton’s Shiraz
Fermented in open-top concrete vats. Pumped over twice daily. Basket pressed, wild malolactic fermentation in barrel and matured in new French oak barriques for 24 months prior to bottling without fining or filtration.
Deep midnight black colour with a dark red black tinged hue. Liquorice and ripe blackberry aromas leap out of the glass trailed by some dark plum, hints of dark chocolate, smoky vanillin cedar and earthy mocha. Very rich and dense the opulently textured full bodied palate is engulfed with lavish liquorice, blackberry and dark plum fruits which sit over an earthy mocha, subtlety smoked vanillin cedar, dark chocolate and spice back drop. Velvety yet structurally sturdy tannins. Finishes exceptionally long, powerful and deeply fruited.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.
Alc. 14.5%
Other Reviews….
The 2019 Chatterton's Shiraz hails from four Barossa Valley vineyards and two Eden Valley vineyards. The middle palate is chewy and supple and super concentrated, and the overall effect is one of balance and harmony. The 2019 vintage was warm and dry, with low yields, as compared to the 2018 season prior. Many of the wines made in this year show the heat and drought, but this wine does not. It is firm and strong and sure, compressed for sure, but it doesn't have the desiccation or extremis that the season had the capacity to produce. The Eden Valley component is likely responsible for the freshness and vivacity on show here. It's very good. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. Drink 2024-2039.

Erin Larkin – Robert Parker’s the Wine Advocate
The statuesque 2019 Shiraz Chatterton's is made with fruit from six vineyards over 100 years old and already shows attractive detail. It offers layers of smoky, meaty and sandy tones with a dense core of chocolate and blackberry. It has started to flesh out with a delicious overall flow, balance and fruit focus, with a solid tannin core supporting generous red and black fruits. There's an excellent overall balance that will last at least a decade. Drink 2025-2036.
