2019 Maxwell Ellen Street Shiraz
From vines planted in 1953. Dense midnight black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Intense ripe blackberry, liquorice and dark plum aromas waft from the glass trailed by vanillin oak, mocha, earth and spice notes. Rich and lush, black cherry, liquorice and fresh blackberry fruits are underscored by vivid acidity and a sturdy tannin structure. Vanillin oak, earth and spicy blueberry fruits linger on the back half. Concludes bright and slightly edgy with loads of generous dark fruit.
Cellar 4-5 years.
Alc. 14.5%
Other Reviews….
The 2019 vintage is a success here. Sourced from an old-vine site, plantings dating to 1953. Lush, but precise. Traditional, but fresh and glimpsing contemporary tension. Mocha, black cherry, blue-fruit allusions, licorice strap, clove and smoked meats. Warm and inviting, with a whiff of dashi. The finish is long, forceful and succulent, if not a bit tangy. Drink by 2032.
