2019 Leconfield Coonawarra Cabernet Franc
From vines planted in 1982, this single vineyard wine was matured in a mixture of 10% new French oak, 80% 3-4 year old French oak and 10% 4 year old American oak.. Totally opaque black dark red colour with a dark red hue. Uplifted red currant and mulberry scents mix with lightly dusted vanillin cedar, tobacco and spicy fresh herbs. Mid weighted with a graceful feel, the flavoursome palate sports rich red currant and mulberry fruits over a cedary tobacco, light black olive and spicy dried herb back drop. Nicely balanced freshness on the finish with fine grained tannins and a long elegant aftertaste that sees the emergence of some light dusty earth nuances.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.
Alc. 14.5%
Other Reviews....
All hail cabernet franc. So under-appreciated as a varietal, and yet Leconfield knows how to weave some magic. Aromatics to swoon over and the sweetly-fruited core comes packaged in spice, potpourri and fresh bay leaves, with a savoury overlay. It enjoys a plushness, a softness across the palate, complete with fine tannins. Gorgeous now, but will garner more complexity in time. Drink by 2034.
