The Mount Edelstone Vineyard, established in 1912 by Ronald Angas, a descendant of George Fife Angas, features ancient 500-million-year-old geology that has resulted in deep red-brown clay-loam soils. These conditions lead to low yields from the dry-grown, ungrafted centenarian Shiraz vines. First bottled as a single-vineyard wine in 1952 by fourth-generation Cyril Henschke, Mount Edelstone has been crafted by the Henschke family for over 65 years and is considered one of Australia's premier single-vineyard Shiraz wines.
The 2019 vintage faced a mild and dry winter, a dry and windy spring with frost events, and a significant hailstorm in November. Warmer than average temperatures in January and February advanced maturity and onset of vintage, with warm late summer conditions ensuring low disease pressure and small berry size. Despite the minuscule yields, the 2019 vintage produced high-quality wines with excellent varietal character, structure, and flavor intensity. This vintage highlighted the importance of regenerative viticulture, organic, and biodynamic practices in maintaining vineyard health during an exceptionally warm and dry year.

Other Reviews....
A dry year, iterated as a full-weighted Mount Edelstone baring a burl of thick skin and somewhat drying grape tannins. Scents of menthol, Aussie scrub, licorice strap and blue to black fruit. A sluice of iodine across the finish, admittedly unraveling with air. An ode to classicism that should age well. Drinkable now, but best from 2028. Glass stopper.

The 2019 Mount Edelstone Vineyard Shiraz leads with a profusion of black pepper and sage, violet and raspberry seed, graphite and black tea. In the mouth, the wine is silky and uber fine, with layers of silty tannins that tend to caress the palate rather that sit apart from it. This is a completely seamless release, a beautiful wine. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2024 - 2049.

Deep-set sage, tinder-dry bush, raspberry, chocolate and black pepper aromas follow through in the mouth, to be joined by blackberry, plum, kirsch hints and – with time in glass – pungent winter greens, black truffle, liquorice, espresso and more subtle notes of camphor and eucalyptus. Ripe but plentiful, mouth-coating tannins and a beam of redcurrant acidity lean into and lock down the fruit, making for a youthfully tight, brooding finish. Great ageing potential. Drink 2025 - 2050.
