Many experts consider Chateau Haut Bergeron to be the best of the non classified Sauternes. Part of the secret of the success of Robert Lamothes and his sons Patrick and Herue is the terroir. The 28 hectare vineyard is split on such a way, that part of the vines are in Barsac, (next to Chateau Climens), part are at Preignac and a large slice next to Chateau d’Yquem. At one stage the label used to boast this fact, with the words 'CONTIGU d’YQUEM'. Son, Herue is a dedicated and passionate winemaker who ages wine in 25% to 50% new oak casks. The exact percentage depends upon the vintage conditions.
Brilliant straw colour with golden tinged edges. Distinct honeyed botrytis affected scents of peach and apricot waft out of the glass mixing with dried pineapple and hints of spicy citrus along the way. Decadently rich and sweet with a thick viscous texture, flavours of honey, peach and apricot show terrific intensity with honeycomb, pineapple and delicate spice also chiming in. Nicely balanced acidity, the long honeyed aftertaste finishing with traces of toffee apple like characters.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.
Alc. 13%

Other Reviews….
Pale lemon-gold colored, the 2019 Haut-Bergeron struts out of the glass with a serious nose of peach preserves, wild fungi, lime cordial and dried pineapple plus wafts of allspice and fresh hay. The palate delivers surprising energy and freshness, lifting all of those ripe, rich stone fruit preserves and honeyed flavors on the long, decadently spicy finish. Drink 2024-2038.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown – Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate

The 2019 Haut-Bergeron has a very attractive bouquet of dried honey, muscat and barley sugar aromas, almost Barsac-like in style. The palate is very well balanced with good depth and fine acidity. Intense on the finish, but citrus-fresh satsumas and grapefruit lend poise. Excellent. Drink 2025-2040.
