2018 Veronica Ortega Quite Mencia

Bierzo, SPAIN
$29. 99
Bottle
$359.88 Dozen
Minimum 12 bottles
ABV: 13%
Closure: Cork
Opaque dark red black colour with a dark red hue. Stinky barnyard like aromas dominate the nose with earth, old leather and herbal scents also evident. Light to medium weight the palate is a touch cleaner than the nose but the earthy barnyard characters remain the major player. Finishes with drying tannins and lingering dirty barnyard characters. Perhaps just a case of an off bottle???
Pass.

Other Reviews….
Quite. Quite right. Mencia. Great winemaker in Veronica Ortega, righteous farming and gentle hand on the winery tiller.
Sarsaparilla and liquorice, green herbs, bay leaf and some undergrowth characters. Savoury as, juicy and then kinda rough and rugged but in the best sense, all drawl of grippy, earthy tannin and ferrous minerally characters. Medium to full flavoured and utterly charming. Dense, sappy, snappy. Yum. Drink 2020-2022.

This is a red that is perfect for the by-the-glass market: the 2018 Quite is light and perfumed and has the Atlantic freshness of the 2018 vintage. It starts off a little reductive, and decanting it in advance could be a good idea if you pull the cork any time soon. 2018 has been a slow-developing vintage—the wines are evolving slowly, and this feels very young and tender. It's floral and elegant and has less alcohol than any other vintage, so it's a little lighter and more delicate and subtle. They harvested slowly, the vinification process was paused and the development of the wine quite slow. This has a velvety texture, but it always has structure, juicy berries and very fine tannins. Drink 2020-2024.
