Described by wine commentator Mike Bennie as "one of Australia’s brightest young winemakers”, Joshua Cooper is steadily forging a reputation for thoughtful, elegant, and confident wines from grapes grown in Macedon and surrounds. His captains Creek Chardonnay comes from a small organic vineyard located just outside the Macedon region close to Daylesford, planted to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The wine sees one year in oak on full lees, no stirring, and no racking, then transferred to stainless steel with all the fine lees for a further 6 months elevage. Before racking and bottling, unfined and unfiltered. The only addition to the wine is a small dose of sulphur the week before bottling.

This wine comes from ‘Western Victoria’, specifically the parish of Blampied. Trip Advisor tells us that the best things to do in Blampied total two things, one, visit Captains Creek Organic Vineyard, and two, go to the speciality gift shop ‘Overwrought’, which also includes a sculpture garden.

Yes thanks. Fragrant white of lemon juice, vanilla, green apple, floral things and a faint whiff of nougat. Focused and tight in the palate, racy almost but for the drizzle of saline minerality and a pretty, flavoursome finish. Serious feeling in a leaner spectrum but not without flavour and detail. Killer wine – does everything so righteously.
