The Hennings vineyard is part of a family owned farm that was established by Henning Rathjen in 1858. He was the first to plant vines in the Heathcote region producing wines up until the 1920’s when the vineyard was eventually abandoned. It wasn’t until 1998 when Daryl Rathjen decided to replant the 30 acre vineyard on the same original site that production started again. Winemakers David and Liam Anderson from Wild Duck Creek are in charge of winemaking so its no surprise that the resultant wines are hefty, super rich examples of Heathcote Shiraz. Maturation took place in French oak, 30% of which was new for a period of 18 months. The 2018 vintage was back to a more traditional Heathcote year, fine, warm to hot ripening conditions with moderate yields producing Shiraz with great colour, power and concentration.

A rich, large scaled Heathcote Shiraz that combines opulence with beautiful balance.

Magnificent colour displaying a dense inky black core with an equally deep dark red black hue. Intense ripe blackberry, dark plum and liquorice scents leap out of the glass with hints of blueberry, vanillin cedar and pepper also evident. Rich, concentrated and powerful, the opulently textured palate is saturated with lush blackberry, dark plum, liquorice and black cherry fruits which are underpinned by remarkable freshness and polish. Adding further nuance is subtlety smoked vanillin cedar, traces of crushed rock and pepper. Velvet smooth tannins concluding with a sumptuous aftertaste of notable length.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.
