2018 Helen’s Hill Old Orchard Cabernets
Totally opaque midnight black heart with a deep dark red hue. Spicy blackcurrant and red liquorice aromas are followed by some earthy tobacco, black olive and faint bay leaf notes. Medium to full in body, red to black currant fruits overlay mulberry, dusty cedar, tobacco and spicy bay leaf characters. Smooth refined mid palate feel with a sturdy tannin structure firming up the finish a touch. Fleshy medium to long aftertaste.
Drink over the next 3-4 years.
Alc. 13.7%
Other Reviews….
A blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot, petit verdot and malbec harvested on the same day and co-fermented, a bold throw. On skins 14 days in an open fermenter, matured for 18 months in French barriques (40% new). A light to medium-bodied blend with blackcurrant, cedar, spice, dried bay leaf and black olive all contributing, along with fine tannins, to a wine of great interest. Drink by 2030.
