2018 Greenstone Heathcote Shiraz

Greenstone Vineyards began in 2003 as a 40 hectare property (20 Ha under vine) near the town of Heathcote in central Victoria. Planted principally to Shiraz and Sangiovese, this vineyard is unique in several ways, close planted to reduce individual vine yield, and planted (atypically for the region) east-west, providing shade for fruit and reducing disease pressure from exposure to the cleansing breezes. It is here the name Greenstone is derived, due to the copper infused basalt Cambrian soils of Heathcote.

Four different clones of Shiraz were vinified separately with maturation taking place in a mixture of new and seasoned French oak. Dense pitch black heart with a very deep dark red black hue. Intoxicating aromas of ripe blackberry, liquorice and dark plum show terrific lift out of the glass with vanillin oak, a whiff of mocha and spice ensuing. Rich and plush, blackberry, liquorice and fleshy dark plum fruits engulf the mouth with a feeling of opulence. Spicy vanillin cedar, subtle earthy mocha characters and pepper lurk beneath. Silky smooth tannins finishing with just the right amount of freshness. Long sleek, highly polished conclusion.
