2018 Domaine Jean-Francois Ganevat Les Grands Teppes Vieilles Vignes Chardonnay
La Combe; a tiny hamlet above the village of Rotalier is home to the larger-than-life “Fan Fan” Jean-François Ganevat. Jean-François came back to run the family estate in 1998 after ten years working Burgundy and he combines his passion for the Jura terroir – here ideal for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir - with a staunch defence of Burgundian techniques; low yields and most recently biodynamic methods for which he has now gained Demeter certification.
Les Grands Teppes Chardonnay hails from old vines planted in 1920 on while marl soils. Vinification includes 100% whole cluster fermentation, along with full malolactic fermentation before being aged three years in oak barrels. As you'd expect from Ganevat, there are no additions.

The 2018 Les Grands Teppes Vieilles Vignes, produced with Chardonnay grapes from vines planted in 1919 on red marl and gravel soils, fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in neutral oak barrels for four years with the lees and was bottled unfined, unfiltered and with no added sulfur, the new Ganevat way for ouillé or topped-up whites. The wine is slightly reductive (I drank a bottle shortly after, and the reduction was still there but went away after a few minutes in the glass), with a note of struck match, but it is also precise, clean and fresh, with a pale color and crystalline flavors. This is pristine and a little austere, developing some spiciness (faintly reminiscent of flor...), with a long, tasty and salty finish. A superb Teppes that transcends the character of the vintage. Drink 2024-2034.

The expressive 2018 Côtes du Jura Les Grands Teppes Vieilles Vignes originates from vines planted in 1919. It bursts onto the scene with pronounced notes of hay, chamomile, flintstone, lemon zest and baked apple. On the palate, the 2018 is intense, concentrated and boldly structured, yet perfectly balanced by lively acidity. The finish is remarkably refined, leaving a lasting impression of elegance and complexity. This delicious wine is well worth the pursuit. It promises to dazzle for many years to come. Drink 2024-2033.

Jean-François Ganevat has built a cult following for his thrillingly intense, individual and racy wines. This rich, honeyed, spicy 100% Chardonnay, with mouthwatering citric notes of grapefruit and lemon, is wonderfully tense and mineral. It has great drive and intensity, with that characteristic salinity of Jura whites. Complex and very long. Drink 2024 - 2030.
