2018 Dinny Goonan Shiraz

A small portion of Viognier was blended in with the Shiraz to provide some aromatic lift. Totally opaque midnight black dark purple colour with a bright dark purple hue. Loaded with blackpepper the nose also features liquorice, dark plum and black cherry scents which are trailed by hints of clove, fennel and spice. Medium to full bodied with juicy liquorice and plum flavours to the fore, the back half sees some blueberry, scorched earth and peppered dried meat characters move in. Bright acidity and robust tannins provide the structure. Concludes with a blackpepper laced medium length aftertaste.

The addition of a small amount of viognier is obvious from the beautiful, translucent purple hue and vibrant, aromatic aromas. The white grape contributes so much energy and lift. A classy shiraz all round. Spice-laced blackberry, black cherry, violet fineness on the palate. The role of French oak (25% new) cannot be underestimated in presenting a wine of such poise. Drink by 2029.
