Croftengea, meaning “tree of the pledge,” is one of Loch Lomond’s heavily peated malts. Rattray's selection was bourbon barrelled for over 6 years followed by a stint in a Marsala Wine barrique for 24 months. Rarely particularly complex but for sheer texture and mouth filling satisfaction, this is at the high end of the scale. Sweet, oily, peat-reek aromatics and melt-in-your-mouth flavours are fresh and phenolic while hinting at hazelnut-chocolate. A few drops of water brings it closer to smokey chocolate pudding. Like a fine Ardmore on steroids, this never-fail make remains ever-appealing. 243 bottles were decanted at 58.6% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the producers... Nose: Burnt pear, meadow hay and smoky peanut butter. Palate: Sweet smoke, hot pear drops and cool mint ash. Finish: Sweet smoke lingers, wrapped in pine and cedar warmth.
