2016 Thompson Estate Cabernet Merlot
Totally opaque black dark red colour with a dark brick red hue. Lifted blackcurrant, mulberry and black olive aromas rise from the glass followed by some earthy tobacco, dried herb and spicy cedar notes. Mid weighted the palate features spicy blackcurrant fruits over black olive, mulberry, cedary tobacco and earthy dried herb characters. Fleshy mid palate feel with a sturdy tannin structure firming up the finish. Finishes long, spicy and savoury.
Drink over the next 2-3 years.
Alc. 14.5%
Other Reviews…..
An ever-reliable blend with cabernet sauvignon leading with its refinement and restraint, a mix cassis and pips, dried herbs and really fine-grained tannins. The merlot, with splashes of malbec and cabernet franc, are supporting acts and add another dimension; just a tad drying on the finish. Drink by 2027.
